Easton Architects prepared a Conservation Master Plan for the four buildings that comprise the residences of the Swedish Ambassador and the Permanent Mission of Sweden to the United Nations located at 600, 604 and 608 Park Avenue and 61-63 East 64th Street. From the findings and recommendations of the Master Plan, Easton Architects completed an exterior restoration of the four buildings.
The scope included masonry repair and restoration, ornamental metal restoration, roof repairs, and window restoration and replacement. The buildings have been well maintained over the years and the restorative work completed on all four projects was based on appropriate methodologies guided by research and conservation testing to determine original mortar mixes, finishes and paint colors as well as masonry material analysis for replacement units. A comprehensive window and door survey was also completed for the 116 existing windows. The windows of 600 Park Avenue were restored and the windows of the remaining three buildings were replaced using replicated wood sashes with laminated glass with UV protection and true divided lites to replicate the original fenestration pattern. Paint finishes matching the original paint colors and all metal work was restored to the original paint colors. Easton Architects is currently completing the next phase of work, which is the renovation of 11 apartments. This work includes sensitively addressing the historic interiors with new finishes, including modified layouts and new kitchen and bathroom facilities for each apartment, upgraded mechanical services, fire protection, and electrical services, and coordinating subconsultant work. The schedule followed an academic year, as new staff occupy the buildings beginning every September, so we oversaw construction and managed a tight schedule
Our work with National Property Board of Sweden has endured for 10 years and includes work at the House of Sweden in Washington, DC for the Swedish Ambassador.
